The job interview is the employer’s opportunity to get to know the candidate better through answers to questions and reactions to challenges and inquiries, as well as gestures and body language. Candidates may be nervous and fidgety, or relaxed and confident, and the interviewer gets to see and evaluate the candidate’s demeanor. How a candidate reacts to standard interview questions and scenarios may be very different than how he or she reacts to unusual or creative interview questions, and can reveal how well they handle unexpected situations and how creative they are.

Jeanne Sahadi of CNNMoney advises job seekers to carefully answer creative interview questions rather than guess or reply with “I don’t know” because employers want to see how you react. They want to see you in action to better understand how you’d fit with their culture, what your work ethic is, and how you think and solve problems.

Standard interviewing questions and Behavioral Interviewing certainly should be your mainstay, but don’t be afraid to experiment with unique, creative interview questions.  Candidates are multi-dimensional, and attacking an interview from different angles and perspectives can help paint a more complete picture of a candidate.

Answer: The question may seem pretty simple but there is a lot of meaning behind it. What your boss is trying to figure out is what motivates you. They need to know that when things get rough, you can always find a reason to keep working hard and doing your best. That means it’s important to choose an answer that’s universal and constant. You may think kids are a good answer but consider this. If you have a 15-year-old, your motivation is only living at home for another three years before your motivation goes off to college, moves out, or otherwise leaves. Your boss may not think you’re motivated after that happens.

Answer: Any day of the week that isn’t Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. Employers want to hear you say that you enjoy work. This question is commonly asked to people applying to places like Amazon where the culture is that of a workaholic. You want to answer Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday and tell them it’s because you like being busy. The weekend is coming anyway, there’s no need to glorify it in your job interview.

Answer: Your boss is essentially asking you if you’re a good worker. People who get promoted regularly are those who are perceived to be better workers than those who were deemed not worthy for promotion. The key here is to emphasize that you were working hard to help in any way you could. It was through loyalty to the company that you worked that long without a promotion.

Answer: Many of these questions are designed to look simple but are really complicated. This is exactly the opposite. This sounds complex but it’s actually extremely easy so don’t over think it! You may be trying to figure out how many windows are in Seattle and give a ballpark figure for all of them in the millions of dollars range. Seriously, just say tell them that you’d do it for $15-$20 per window and you’re done.

Even the creative habits of imagining, experimenting, questioning, and considering various options are learned by imitation. Good teaching provides good models to imitate. When teachers and parents model good questioning they nurture students that become habitually good questioners. It becomes part of their personalities. When teachers and parents give quick answers and dogmatic solutions they model minds that jump to unconsidered and unverified conclusions. Frequently this leads to bad choices, not only in mixing pink, but in many off color behavioral scenarios as well.

Even though this college student had studied uncreative and creative coaching of students who asked for advise, when she started teaching, she automatically reverted to the way her teachers had taught her. Fortunately when asked if she remembered our study of teacher response to student questions, she was became aware of her own automatic habits and found ways to modify her own teaching habits.

Studies show that highly creative people (in various fields of expertise) have minds that have evolved and developed to be more fluent and flexible. Fluency allows them to think of many ideas very quickly. Flexibility allows them to think of unusual, unique, original, and even opposite ideas that never occur to the average person. Our typical tests do little to reward these abilities.

Paul Kuharic, discusses a composition assignment created by a high school student.  In this project students are restricted to using their own cut paper shapes to develop an original abstract composition.  Compositions are to illustrate assigned design concepts discussed prior to the media work.

"The question, as obtuse as it might sound to the interviewee, is the beginning of a story and in today's world of selling oneself, or one's company, it's the ability to tell a story and create a feeling that sells the brand--whether it's a product or a person.

"Getting an honest answer to the question requires persistence, though. I usually have to ask it a few times in different ways, but the answers are always worth the effort. For instance, I interviewed a sales candidate who said she didn't enjoy meeting new people.

"I love asking this question really early in the interview--it shows me whether the candidate can think quickly on his or her feet, and also reveals the person's level of preparation and strategic thinking.

Off the skins and remove the cores. Leave whole or cut into halves. Put the tomatoes in a large saucepan and heat to boiling, gently mashing from time to time to create some juice. Boil gently for 5 minutes. Stir to keep them from scorching. Put the tomatoes and juice into clean jars, leaving 1/2-inch headspace. Add 2 tablespoons of lemon juice per quart to acidify. Add 1 teaspoon of salt per quart. Adjust the lids and rings. Process in a boiling water bath for 90 minutes. The water level should be 1-inch above the tops of the jars. Remove from canner, and let sit until they seal.

Despite being straightforward, it's a tricky question to answer. On the one hand, you don't want to appear cocky by pretending you have no weaknesses (because of course the interviewer knows you do).

Instead, show them that you're self-aware and willing to identify what's not working. Employers, especially startups, value having a diversity of opinions on their team. Innovation doesn't come from a roomful of people blindly agreeing with whatever the boss says. It comes from individuals giving honest and constructive feedback, even when that means pointing out the flaws in a popular idea.

Most of us settle for a somewhat rosy-colored version of the truth that makes our shortcomings look like strengths. For example, you say you're a perfectionist who works too hard, or that your procrastinator tendencies have taught you how to work well under pressure.
